It brought me back to the moment; I was talking with my grandmother “Mama Aracelis.” This moment changed my life forever. It was when I discovered the best way to stay passionate and positive through any given situation in life.
“Mama Aracelis” was always joking and passionate towards life. People loved to be around her, especially me! Her energy, enthusiasm, and passion were contagious.
One day, one of her sons had a big fight with her. I pretended I was not paying attention. After the argument, she went to do gardening work, and I followed her. Since I was always so aggressive, I questioned her: “Why did you let him talk to you that way? He is your son and should respect you. I can’t understand why you are always so passionate towards life with almost all your sons being alcoholics—and your husband, too!”
She lovingly replied, calling me by my nickname, “Nuny”…
“After living for so long and knowing that I can die at any time, I have learned that life is always filled with challenges and problems. But it is the attitude we decide to take that will make the difference on how we end up living our lives. I choose to live as children do. Children are always passionate and see the beauty of things. They can get angry for a while, but move on and easily forget and forgive. They always laugh, enjoy the simplest of things; they are fearless, and they are passionate!”
Then she looked at me and with strong conviction said: “I decided that whatever is left of my life in this world, I will live it that way. Don’t wait until you are 60 years old like me to make that decision. Do it now and every day of your life. Try to laugh often, and be fearless and passionate towards life, because we don’t know how long we are going to live in this world, and we have to live it with love and passion!”
As I am writing this, I can see myself listening to those beautiful words she told me that day…
It is so incredible how these words changed my life!
